Our History

Franciscan Friars Conventual have stewarded this land since the 1890s. Friar Bonaventure Zollar, OFM Conv., purchased the cemetery in 1892. in 1912, Friar Berard Schweitzer then laid out and began development of the cemetery we see today.

The cemetery significantly expanded a few decades later. In the fall of 1965, Assumption Cemetery was approved to to reinter burals from nearby St. Joseph Cemetery in Syracuse. The reinternments were completed in 1966 (about 4,000).

Assumption Cemetery remains a preferred final resting place for individuals and their loved ones in Syracuse, NY. Under the stewardship of the Friars, all are cared and prayed for and we remain a source of support for families and loved ones.
